When it comes to troubleshooting the Mac OS, knowledge is power. One of the first places to look to gain some knowledge about what is happening with your Mac is "Apple System Profiler". This is particularly true when troubleshooting an external device. All attached devices should show up here regardless of whether there is a functioning driver. If it doesn't show up here, there is probably a problem with hardware or a cable. The same can be said for internal components such as Ram or PCI cards, if they don't show up in Apple System Profiler's hardware section, you probably have a problem with the component.
Another useful troubleshooting tool within Apple System Profiler is the logs pane. The information stored here is a little too cryptic for most people but one might be able to notice patterns where certain third party applications are acting up and then explore it further by looking at the logs in console (in the utilities folder) This tip provided by the staff of Mactipsandtricks.
