UNIX for Beginners, UNIX for Geeks
Interested in using UNIX on OS X? Whether you are a complete beginner or a more advanced geek you should check out the Unix for Mac OS X: Visual QuickPro Guide at Peachpit press. In addition to an online chapter on Configuring Your OS X Unix Environment, if you go to the main page for the book and click on the "companion site" link on the left side of the page under "more information" you'll be able to download chapters 1, 2, and 15 in PDF format. Chapters 1 and 2 are a great introduction to UNIX on OS X for the beginner, While Chapter 15 (a bonus chapter not included in the hard copy of the book) goes into some detail about installing and configuring various open source servers such as named (DNS Server), mail services, and Darwin Streaming Server.

Seybold Epilog
The Seybold conference in San Francisco last week was an excellent learning experience. While the expo area was really sparse, the tutorials more than made up for it. These were some of the best tutorials I've attended in years. Even the tutorial notes were exceptionally useful. Unlike other workshops, where notes are nothing more than printouts of powerpoint slides from the presentation, these notes could stand alone as a learning resource.

Dan Margulis gave two excellent Photoshop Tutorials. The first on "The Art of the Curve" clarified the use of adjustment curves. I've always used levels rather than curves for adjustment because I really didn't 'get' curves. This tutorial changed all that. The second tutorial, "The Art of the Photoshop Blend" cleared up another mysterious aspect of Photoshop (at least for me), 'blend modes'. Dan's way of combining Blend Modes and various color channels was awesome. If you are a Photoshop professional I highly recommend doing workshops with Dan if you get the chance.

Dave Taylor presented a workshop entitled "Learning Unix for Mac OS X" that was one of the clearest, most useful tutorials on the subject that I've attended. You can learn more about Dave at intuitive.com

Battery Recall
Apple is voluntarily recalling certain lithium ion rechargeable batteries that were sold worldwide from January 2004 through August 2004 for use with 15-inch PowerBook G4 notebooks. The affected batteries could overheat, posing a fire hazard. Go here for more information.

Seybold
I'm attending Seybold SF this week and here's news/ thoughts about the conference. The most interesting thing about this years conference is the the tutorials. The exhibit ("pavilion") area seems to be the smallest one that I've ever visited. Unlike previous years, there were hardly any Mac specific products represented there. One of the more interesting products for design professionals was a Digital asset management (DAM) software package from INSCI called ActiveMedia 5.5. It seemed like a "best in class" kind of package and it featured "QuarkXpress and Adobe InDesign Plug-Ins that allow users to directly access their ActiveMedia repository with complete search, upload and download capabilities without leaving their design application." It's a pretty cool tool that you should check out if your in design/branding/marketing.

The tutorials I've attended have been really informative. Bert Monroy had a tutorial on painting with Photoshop that was awesome. If your a Photoshop professional you should really check out his work and his tutorials

I also did two Photoshop tutorials with David Biedny that really opened my eyes to new ways of using the program. Both Bert and David are authors of one of my all time favorite Photoshop books "Photoshop Channel Chops" and it was great to learn from them both in person.

OS X Client Security and Configuring Your Unix Environment
Here's a couple of useful articles posted over on the peachpit press site. The first, Mac OS X Client General Security Practices, is a chapter from "Mac OS X Security" and it provides a good overview of the issues associated with client security in OS X. You might recognize that a couple of the tips in my database are excerpts from this very informative book.

The second article, from "Unix for Mac OS X: Visual QuickPro Guide", is Configuring Your OS X Unix Environment and it's a must read for any of you wannabe UNIX geeks out there. I'm still working my way through this book, but I've found it to be very useful so far.

LANsurveyor 8.1
This is a really cool network management tool that is unlike anything else out there. I've been playing with version 8 for the last few months and, so far, I'm really impressed with the improvements in 8.1
When I get a chance to check it out on larger networks I might write a more detailed review.
Press release
