Packet Capture Tools
As an old network geek and someone who is generally curious about what coming to and from my computer, news about these two packet analysis programs caught my eye. First there's this press release regarding an update to an excellent utility Neon: NetMinder Ethernet captures and decodes packet data as it moves through the network, quickly pinpointing and alerting you to security issues and network problems that could otherwise take hours or even days to resolve. Then there's the little shareware utility "Berkeley Packet Monitor". It's much simpler than NetMinder and it's a little rough around the edges (it's a 1.0 version), but the price is sure right. Berkeley Packet Monitor is a Mac OS X network traffic monitoring and diagnostic utility. It uses the Berkeley Packet Filter devices built into the Mac OS X operating system to log and re-assemble all packets entering and exiting from a specific network interface. It can be configured to log ICMP, TCP, and UDP packets and will allow you to view the raw data contained in each packet sent or received.Whether you are a network professional or just curious about what is happening 'under the hood', these are two programs you should check out. 7/20/2004
Site Changes
As you may have noticed, I'm making some changes to this site. I've added this blog (generated by Blogger) to the homepage and soon I will be adding a new feature article on the basics of applescript. I'm also going to create a way to make it easier for pros to contribute tips to the site. Until that's in place, if you'd like to contribute a tip or if you have any news or 'how-tos' that you'd like us to include, please send them to tipz@mactipsandtricks.com 7/14/2004
Regarding using the safari pop-up blocker
Thomas just sent us this feedback on today's tip Your tip is not entirely accurate. The Safari Popup Blocker doesn't prevent you from getting a popup if you click a link that has a popup. I know because I developed a shopping cart system (www.xenocart.com) which has popups for larger images. Those popup fine. It's only automatic popups that are blocked. 7/12/2004
